Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Avengers Assemble #3! Simon Williams aka
Wonder Man is about to make his
MCU debut in the upcoming Disney+ original miniseries, Wonder Man. While he may be just hitting the scene in the realm of live-action, Wonder Man has been a mainstay Avengers hero for quite some time, and is currently serving as one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the modern day. In fact, during his latest mission, Wonder Man gets a new nickname ahead of Simon Williams’ MCU debut - and it’s absolutely perfect.
In a preview for Avengers Assemble #3 by Steve Orlando and Marcelo Ferreira, the Avengers Emergency Response Squad (aka AVENG.E.R.S.) are at the Avengers Mansion in New York, standing by for an emergency. When a colony of freshly-turned daywalker vampires (remnants of Blood Hunt) is attacked by vampire-hunting fanatics, the AVENG.E.R.S. spring into action - and Wonder Man is on the roster.
Close The AVENG.E.R.S. battle the vampire-hunting team called the Nightstalkers, and the AVENG.E.R.S. don’t hold back in their ferocity while fighting these vampire-killing villains. However, at least one of them takes no real pleasure in inflicting harm on anyone, and that hero is Wonder Man. In fact, that is captured perfectly by his
new nickname, one that his fellow AVENG.E.R.S. gave him right before this mission: “The Wise Old Pacifist”.
Wonder Man’s New Nickname is “The Wise Old Pacifist” Simon Williams’ Nickname is Perfect for His MCU Depiction

It’s been established in more recent comics (most notably in X-Force Vol. 6) that Wonder Man has become something of a pacifist. While he’s still ready to be a superhero at the drop of a hat - hence why he’s currently serving as an Avenger, and why he helped Beast during the events of X-Force Vol. 6 - Simon has made it clear that he derives no personal pleasure from action. He is a truly powerful force in the Marvel Universe, and he feels called to use his powers for good, but that doesn’t mean he likes having to use them.
This depiction of Wonder Man is absolutely perfect for the MCU, especially given what fans saw from the Wonder Man teaser trailer released by Marvel Studios. In the MCU, Simon Williams is an actor playing the role of Wonder Man. He doesn’t want to actually fight, nor does he have the superhuman ability to do so (at least, seemingly). And, interestingly enough, Marvel Comics’ Wonder Man decided to focus on his acting career when he became a pacifist, which aligns with the MCU’s depiction even more.
“The Wise Old Pacifist” Wouldn’t Always Have Been the Best Nickname for Wonder Man Wonder Man Started His Marvel Comics Career as an Avengers Villain

Simon Williams wasn’t always “The Wise Old Pacifist” he is today, as he actually started his career as an Avengers villain working with Baron Zemo and the Masters of Evil. After Williams was sent to prison for embezzlement (a case that Star Industries was involved in), he blamed Tony Stark. So, Zemo used Williams’ anger to convince him to undergo “ionic ray” treatment, turning Williams into Wonder Man. Upon becoming superhuman, Wonder Man attacked the Avengers, and nearly brought the team he would eventually join to a swift and violent end.

Posts Wonder Man has certainly come a long way from his villainous past (even if he did redeem himself within that very story arc), as he’s no longer someone who takes pleasure in the idea of hurting people, truly becoming “The Wise Old Pacifist”. And the timing of this couldn’t be better, as
Wonder Man gets a new nickname that’s an absolutely perfect representation of what fans are going to see upon his
MCU debut.
